A man has been arrested in the theft of a dog from the Pets, Inc. animal adoption shelter near West Columbia.
59-year-old Curtis Davis of Eutawville turned himself in on an arrest warrant on a charge of petit larceny.
Lexington County Sheriff's Major John Allard says, “A witness positively identified Davis as the man who stole Pixie Trixie, who was worth about $250, from the animal adoption center. A CrimeStoppers tip helped detectives develop sufficient probable cause to obtain the arrest warrant for Davis.”
Allard says Davis and a 14-year-old girl went to Pets, Inc. on October 10th. Staff at the facility say Davis asked to take Pixie Trixie, a 4-year-old chihuahua, outside so he could get to know the dog.
But he and the girl then drove off with the animal.
Staffers say the 14-year-old girl had no involvement with the theft.
They say Davis is a friend of the girl's family, and she talked on a cell phone the entire time they were at the animal adoption center.
The dog has been returned to Pets, Inc.
