Sumter School District To Appeal State Ruling

(Sumter, SC) -- Sumter school officials are heading for a showdown with the state.

The county school board voted yesterday to appeal the state's emergency declaration issued this week.

State education officials declared the emergency after the district decided to reopen Mayewood Middle School, which the district had closed to resolve its financial problems.

The state says the district is not on firm enough financial footing to justify reopening the school.
