Judge Presiding Over Alex Murdaugh Cases Asks For New Judge To Be Assigned

(Colleton County, SC)-- The circuit judge appointed to handle all cases involving Alex Murdaugh has asked for a new judge to be assigned .

According to an order issued by the South Carolina Supreme Court on Thursday, judge Clifton Newman asked to recuse himself.

Newman presided over the trial that ended with Murdaugh convicted for the 2021 deaths of his wife and son.

Murdaugh's team was asking the state's highest court to remove Newman from further proceedings, but the court denied that request as moot since Newman already asked for a new judge to be assigned.
