John Kerry announced that climate change is as big a threat now to Americans as terrorism. Is he exagerating? It depends. Do you blame this "once in a lifetime storm" we just had on global warming? If so 5 people died and the power outages were worse than Hugo. So that would be quite an act of terrorism. But John Kerry and the President and the media are making this issue more divisive than it has to be. It's already divisive because liberals have always looked for ways to add revenue to government coffers. Conservatives have always tried to keep government from expanding. So when liberals started pushing for a system where business owners would have to pay the government for the amount of carbon emmissions they produce (cap & trade) conservatives smelled a rat. If cap & trade went forward to curb emissions it would also cripple our economy. Since then conservatives have found scientists that say there's no proof that humans are adding to the problem. They have also found scientists who have misled. Liberals have found that conservative groups are spending tons of money to add doubt to the validity of the research on climate change. So we have both sides of the argument looking shady. And both sides are motivated by less than stellar reasons to prove the other wrong. Liberals to grow government and conservatives to stop them.
NASA says their research shows global warming or climate change or it's gettin hot out herre whatever you want to call it, is happening. Now if you say NASA is a government agency and can't be trusted, then I'm going to put you in the corner with the people who say NASA never went to the moon. NASA says CO emissions were at their highest 350,000 years ago and then we matched that high around 1950. Since then we are about 25% higher than we've ever been! They also say sea levels have rose 6.7 inches over the past 100 years. They also say that since weather records have been kept, starting in 1880, the 10 hottest years have happened over the past 12 years. I haven't found anyone credible to contradict that. You can see all of NASA's facts here. So it would be great if we could all agree that climate change is in fact happening. Once we can agree to that, we can argue about what to do.
Some housekeeping issues. Conservatives love to mock Al Gore everytime it snows.
Most people now realize that Al Gore was exploiting global warming for personal gain. He is a hypocrite who sold his network, Currant TV, to Al Jazera. A company who is backed by oil money. He did this in spite of boasting that his network was profitable every year. As Jon Stewart told Al "people at home are thinking 'he's asking me to make choices about light bulbs and the cost benefit anylsis for sustainability when all I want to do is see my book'". He sold out. Al gore also makes millions off his investments in companies that curb carbon emmissions. As the NY Times noted Al Gore left politics in 2001 with a net worth of less than 2 million dollars. Since then his net worth has skyrocketed! He has made millions off his movie and books about global warming and charges $100,000 per speech on global warming. It appears as if Al Gore is profiteering from government policies he supports that would direct billions of dollars to the business ventures he has invested in. He also has one of the biggest carbon footprints in the world. Al Gore is a jerk who has tried to make the world scared so he could become rich.
But that doesn't mean the science was wrong. You can see from 4 different sources their independent records vary slightly but they are all headed in the same direction.
More housekeeping. Global warming doesn't mean it's hot all the time. Global warming is dangerous because the warmer the oceans get, the stronger the storms become. As for the snow, Jeff Masters from wunderground explains; "As the Earth gets warmer and more moisture gets absorbed into the atmosphere, we are steadily loading the dice in favor of more extreme storms in all seasons". In other words droughts, floods, hurricanes, blizzards should all intensify as yearly temperatures from the globe rise. Which leads to another housekeeping issue. The hottest year in America was 1934. That isn't the hottest year ever globally. It's actually the 49th hottest year. We have to remember that just because things are, or are not happening in America that doesn't prove or disprove anything regarding the world.
I guess what I'm saying here is I'd like for conservatives to stop arguing about what NASA and other respected institutions say is actually happening with the temps. Our own observations aren't going to match thousands of people whose job it is to measure and track these things. When we poo poo the data all we do is allow liberals to hijack the science. Once we accept that the earth is getting warmer we can work on a solution. Humans may or may not have anything to do with climate change, but humans are most certainly going to have to deal with it. It's time for conservatives to offer more than "no it's not" to the debate.
Fear not, I will continue to call Al Gore a fear monger and John "2 tie" Kerry a blow hard, because that is what they are. And if all liberals have to offer is cap & trade then they aren't participating in the debate either. We can't shut down the economy to save the planet. But we have a planet of over 7 billion people and at least one of them must have a good idea on how we can address this without sending us back to the stone age.
