Mother Jones is the liberal magazine whose writers convince themselves they are very clever on breaking down conservative arguments. Today they wrote a piece entitled The NRA Ads Reveal Its Descent Into Crazy. The gist is that the NRA understood their place as a club for people who like to hunt and shoot target practice for it's first 80 years of existence. Then dramatically in the late 1960's the NRA became a group of paranoid anti government nut jobs. The NRA then launched an ad blitz to make everyone else afraid of the government too.
The NRA has been trying to prove their sanity ever since. Trying to prove your sane is just about impossible if the the assumption is your not. Add in a heaping portion of media bias and you're done. However Mother Jones has done the NRA a great favor by chronicling their ad campaigns. It shows a sudden shift in the late 60's. Did they get an entire new club then? Of course not. It was the same group as ever. I guess Mother Jones forgot to mention the gun control act of 1968.
The NRA and most American's agreed with large portions of that act, but there was certainly a gun grab happening and people who love the Constitution didn't like it. As David Keene told CNN recently;
The draconian legislation imposed restrictions on "dealing" firearms that resulted in the prosecution of countless innocent gun collectors. Ted Kennedy wrote to the NRA to demand our support for a national gun licensing and registration system. A few years later, a Nixon administration advisory commission proposed that all side arms be outlawed and confiscated in about a decade.
They weren't paranoid, they were responding to the government attempting to strip their rights. The Mother Jones article proves that the NRA was not a group of fruitcakes barking at parked cars. The same group of people were behind both this "more fun with your gun" ad
And this "Hunters Beware: ad a few years later.
The NRA didn't change. The people running the country changed. Some well intentioned I'm sure legislators saw the gun violence of the 1960's and tried to find a way to fix the problem. The simple solution then, as it is now, is less guns=less gun crime. I will grant them that if they had a magic wand that made all guns on the planet evaporate and also erased from human memory the ability to reproduce guns, then yes they would have solved the gun crime problem. However till then, common sense says that the only people who will not buy the illegal aka more deadly guns, are the law abiding people. Law abiding people are the ones whom we should want to have the superior fire power! Criminals are hoping to see government take more guns out of the hands of civilians because with every gun removed, their job of crime gets easier.
Violence is part of the human condition. It will never be legislated out of existence. The best we can ever hope to do is minimize the damage someone can do. More armed citizens accomplishes that.
As the Huffington Post begrudgingly had to report kids are safer now than they have ever been. Everything from abductions to school violence is lower then ever. And yet there are 8 million new guns sold in America every year. The correlation infuriates the left, and hence they won't discuss it. Psychohistory documents that as civilizations have developed, violence in general has had a signifigant drop. Some of that of course is credited to better education and easier living conditions. But the fact that the more advanced a civilization becomes the more difficult it becomes to commit an act of violence is an obvious link. In America we continue to reduce both violence in general and gun violence every year since the mid 90's when the crack epidemic broke out. If government restricts the weapons it's citizens can own, the criminals are the de facto winner, in that once they start a crime spree they have the advantage. It may be hard to grasp for some but the better armed the population is, the safer we all are. And if it's too hard to imagine that more guns equal less gun crime, then trust your eyes when you read the stats that show there are more guns than ever in America and you are safer now than ever before.
