A lot of Christian's are distraught today over the Supreme Court decisions yesterday striking down the Defense of Marriage Act and California's gay marriage ban. Like I've said in the past I don't believe the government should have ever got into the marriage business. They hijacked it from a religious ceremony and turned it into a state sponsored merger for tax breaks. Of course governments have been encouraging marriages for hundreds of years. Even if someone isn't a Christian, being married usually helps them become a better citizen, which is a benefit to the community. So governments want more married people.
I recently re read CS Lewis's Mere Christianity and see that he struggled with the idea of state sponsored marriages even back in the 1940's. The Christian's view of marriage is quite different than everyone else. The Lewis solution was one I'd like to see Christian's explore. Create a different word for your union. Something that signifies that Jesus is your lord and that this isn't merely a worldly marriage. This is about you and your spouse following Christ together. Perhaps wear the ring on a different finger.
An impossible concept to comprehend for non Christians is that a Christian marriage or anything else a Christian does will have some similarities with similar things in this world, but should be different. Lot's of Christian's say "Be in the world but not of it" as a way of reminding each other of this fact. It's a take off on Roman's 12:2; Do not be conformed to this world, but continuously be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God's will is—what is proper, pleasing, and perfect. The famous theologian/preacher John Piper revised that to "Christians are not of this world but are sent into it". You are sent to reflect God to people who don't know Him.
The greatest President of my lifetime was Ronald Reagan. He was a Christian who boldly proclaimed that Christ was his savior and believed God had in fact blessed the United States. That blessing is what allowed our country to rise in prominence. Today a listener e-mailed me this video and it is stunning to see how bold Reagan was. And if you believe that our fellow citizens are now rejecting God as our leader, well we need to drop to our knees and pray. Speak boldly of Christ like Reagan did! However chastising people who don't believe will not help. As Psalm 14 reminds us; The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. That none who do good includes you and me friend.
You can't believe in the real God of the Bible, unless He helps you believe. Ephesians reminds us For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. If you could reason your way to understanding, then you could boast of helping in your salvation. But you did nothing. Like what happened to Paul, God peeled the scales from your eyes. And if you had the power to convince others of the reality of heaven and hell, and that all are doomed unless they are saved by Christ, then you could boast of helping to save them too. But it's not your power, it's God's power working through you. So just allow yourself to be a conduit for His love to transform people, our nation and the world. And pray for all people, our nation and the world, like Reagan, CS Lewis and countless others have throughout history. None of us have the answers, only God. Let's seek Him and follow.
