With the whole country edgy because of the Boston Marathon explosions and suspicious letters sent to the President and some U.S. senators, there has been an increase in reports of suspicious packages.
And three such calls kept emergency responders busy in Columbia on Wednesday.
Columbia police and firefighters and agents with the State Law Enforcement Division were taking no chances with the reports, stressing it's better to check them out than miss something.
But, it turned out to be only clothing in a bag on a park bench at Lady and Assembly streets.
And there was nothing to a report of suspicious items at Garners Ferry Road and Rosewood Drive. Someone called police about unattended duffel bags there, but when the caller went through the same area again, the bags were gone.
Response was more involved to the other report of a suspicious backpack at Assembly and Washington streets downtown.
A bomb squad robot detonated the backpack as a precaution.
Officials say it contained library books, but was disposed of because there also were some items investigators could not identify.
