Two former officials of the Lexington County town of Gaston have been sentenced to prison for misusing public funds.
The State newspaper reports that former Mayor Larry Sharpe was given an 18-month prison term, and he was ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution for what prosecutors say was taking phony expense account payments.
Former Town Administrator Jennifer Poole received a three-year prison sentence, and must pay more than $44,000 in restitution.
Her daughter and Gaston's former town clerk, Jessica Poole, will be sentenced later.
Prosecutors say the full amount of money the three took may never be known, but it probably exceeds $72,000 and has contributed to Gaston's financial problems for several years.
