Documents have been seized and officials placed on administrative leave after the FBI and State Law Enforcement Division raided South Congaree Town Hall.
Town Administrator Melisa Shumpert and Police Chief Jason Amodio were put on temporary administrative leave.
South Congaree Mayor Jerry McCormick says he made that decision after the law enforcement raid on Wednesday, and town council agreed to it at a meeting Thursday night.
McCormick says the investigation does not involve the town's operations or any missing money, but he wouldn't say anything else at this time about what's going on.
Law enforcement agencies have not released any details, either, but there are reports this could be connected with an investigation into video gambling in the Midlands.
South Congaree is a small town of roughly 2,300 residents in Lexington County, about three miles south of Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
