A Midlands woman has been charged with shoplifting and leaving her young child alone in the car while it happened.
Police say a loss-prevention officer caught 27-year-old Brittany Bryan trying to steal one dozen items of women's clothing on Thursday from the Walmart on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia.
Bryan had a 3-month-old child in her shopping cart.
As police questioned the Batesburg-Leesville mother, she said she had left a 3-year-old child in her vehicle because she didn't want to wake the sleeping youngster.
An officer found a girl alone in the car and determined she had been there about 45 minutes.
Bryan was charged with cruelty to children – in addition to the shoplifting.
She was taken to jail and placed under $1,500 bond.
Her children were put in protective custody.
