COLUMBIA, S.C. (SCRN/WVOC) - In the aftermath of the devastating tornado in Oklahoma, the South Carolina Secretary of State is warning about the danger of fake charities.
Secretary of State Mark Hammond says those who wish to reach out to help victims of natural disasters like what happened in Oklahoma need to be wise about where donations are sent.
Hammond says telemarketers posing as charities are scamming people all over the country, and contributions should never be made over the phone.
He suggests always checking into charities before sending gifts.
And Hammond says checking to see if a charitable organization is registered with the Secretary of State’s office is the best way to verify.
You can see the full list of registered charities at the Secretary of State's website at www.sos.sc.gov.
