COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - A Columbia woman has been arrested after a toddler in her care died.
Police have charged 34-year-old Margie Hamm with homicide by child abuse.
Hamm, who lives with her boyfriend on Lester Drive, was babysitting his child last weekend, two-year-old Jayon Turnipseed.
She told police the boy was having trouble breathing after he ran into a door, and she put him to bed. The father found him dead the next morning.
Emergency responders did not see any obvious injuries, but Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says he noticed a mark on the child's forehead near his nose.
“It's very unusual for a healthy two-year-old to just die – should not go to bed one night and not wake up,” Watts told WVOC.
“We were concerned from the very beginning that something had happened to his child. Taking care of the autopsy, we noticed the child had sustained quite a massive blow to the head which had caused bleeding in the brain, which in turn was the immediate cause of death of this child.”
Watts says further investigation determined the boy's head had been slammed into a bathtub faucet while Hamm was bathing him and two children of her own.
Police say Hamm eventually confessed to the incident.
