You can now download an “app” or application that will help you find which restaurants in our state serve locally grown agricultural products.
There are more than 300 restaurants across South Carolina participating in the “Fresh on the Menu” program.
Kelly Coakley with the state Department of Agriculture says, “When folks go there, they can find these restaurants who are sourcing locally grown and they'll be able to learn a little bit about the restaurant.
"They'll also be able to learn about the chef for that restaurant, his or her background and recipes that they use that incorporate local ingredients.”
Coakley says Fresh on the Menu restaurants must include at least 25% Certified South Carolina grown produce, meats and other agricultural products on their menus when in season.
“The part that we are particularly proud of is the 'Root' section. And there, if you tap on that on the app, you can find out about the farms, the produce companies, even breweries across the state that are supplying the Fresh on the Menu restaurants.
"So it really helps people make that full connection from farm to restaurant table,” Coakley says.
The free app is compatible with iPad, iPhone and Android devices 4.0 and higher.
It can be downloaded at www.freshonthemenuapp.com.
