Authorities say a woman with a long history of burglarizing businesses and stealing copper was shot by a homeowner during an attempted copper theft in Richland County early Wednesday morning.
53-year-old Diana Perry was taken to the hospital after she was wounded about 5 a.m. near the home in the 1200 block of Andrews Road.
The homeowner told sheriff's deputies he went outside to check into noises he heard and saw Perry and a male accomplice at the air conditioner.
Deputy Curtis Wilson says, “Perry came toward him. He feared for his life and he fired a shot, hitting her in the upper body. The accomplice fled and also Perry fled the area but was apprehended just a short distance away. Transported to Palmetto Richland (Memorial Hospital). Non-life-threatening condition.”
Perry is charged with unlawful entry into enclosed spaces and felony larceny.
Wilson says just before that incident, it's believed Perry and the male accomplice also tried to steal copper from a business in the 1100 block of Shop Road.
Investigators are attempting to learn the man's identity and have released surveillance photos.
