A West Columbia physician has died after a collision in a group of bicycle riders.
61-year-old Dr. Edwin Hudson was out for another of the group rides sponsored by the Tri-City Cyclist Club Tuesday evening.
But the Cayce Department of Public Safety says about 6:40 p.m. as a large group of bicycles traveled along 12th Street Extension near Saxe Gothe Road, the radiologist made contact with another rider, causing Hudson to lose control and crash.
Even though he wore a helmet, he suffered a severe head injury.
He was treated at the scene by emergency personnel, but later died at the hospital.
It's been a shock to the cycling community because such incidents are rare.
The State newspaper reports about 80 of Hudson's friends and fellow cyclists decided their regular Thursday night ride last night would be a memorial ride for him.
They recited the Lord's Prayer, then sang “Amazing Grace” as they thought about how he had been training for a summer cycling trip through the European Alps.
