An armed robbery at a gas station in Richland County was foiled Friday after a Good Samaritan stepped in.
It happened just before 8 a.m. at the BP gas station in the 7300 block of Parklane Road in the Dentsville area.
Sheriff Leon Lott says Gloria Barr, who turns 44 Saturday, asked the clerk for some lottery tickets and cigarettes.
Then she requested another item, but when the clerk turned to get it, Barr stole the initial goods from the counter and fled.
The sheriff says the clerk followed, Barr turned and hit her in the face, pulled out a screwdriver and threatened to stab her.
Then a customer came to the clerk's aid, and Barr was detained until deputies arrived.
Lott says it was fortunate no one got hurt.
The sheriff commends the customer for getting involved, but instead of taking action, he recommends being a good witness and helping by getting information about a suspect – such as description, vehicle details, direction of travel and so on.
