Columbia police are looking for a van towing an enclosed trailer they say was involved in a man's death Sunday night in the Earlewood neighborhood.
Shortly before 9 p.m., police say two men were arguing over a cell phone at the 1000 block of Union Street.
It escalated into a physical fight, and witnesses say a third person may have tried to break it up, but then got into the van and drove off.
But police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons says as the van pulled away, the two men fighting became trapped between the back of the vehicle and the trailer.
“Both people were dragged by that van with the attached trailer,” Timmons tells WVOC. “One man was able to free himself. The other man was not successful and that individual, that victim was entangled underneath the trailer for quite some time and for quite a distance.
“We are estimating that it was more than 1,600 feet that this individual was dragged. And as a result, he died from his injuries.”
Family members say the man killed was 53-year-old Calvin Smith.
Timmons says investigators are trying to determine if the van's driver intentionally injured the men while leaving or whether it was an accident.
Police are looking for a blue or silver Dodge minivan. It was towing a white, enclosed trailer.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crimestoppers.
