South Carolina ranks fifth highest in the country in home foreclosure rates, with one of every 600 homeowners going through that process.
But Midlands residents struggling to make mortgage payments were able to seek assistance at a community event held Friday in Columbia.
State Department of Consumer Affairs spokeswoman Juliana Harris says there was a chance to meet with mortgage company representatives and others to discuss refinancing and other ways to modify loan situations.
For those who couldn't make the event, the state Department of Consumer Affairs has released a new guide entitled “Having Trouble Paying Your Mortgage?”, which offers info on pre-foreclosure options and warns of common foreclosure scams.
