AIKEN, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - Pepperidge Farm is closing its bakery in Aiken, eliminating the jobs of 115 employees.
Spokesman Bill Livingstone says the company needs to adjust to changing market conditions and remain competitive.
He says Pepperidge Farm has determined it has excess capacity in its network of bakeries, and the company decided to phase out a product line that accounts for much of the plant's work in Aiken, which began operations in 1976.
Most of the production done in Aiken will move to Lakeland, Florida.
Staff reductions will begin in September and the company says it will offer affected employees a comprehensive severance package.
