ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - An employee at the Orangeburg County Treasurer's Office is accused of helping herself to thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money.
State Law Enforcement Division agents have charged 41-year-old Vickie Haynes with embezzlement of public funds.
She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Authorities say Haynes took the money between April of last year and January, then wrote personal checks to try and cover the amount she stole.
SLED agents did not give the exact amount they think Haynes took, but said during eight months she deposited $144,000 into her personal bank account when her annual salary was around $23,000.
