A Lexington man has been charged with running over his girlfriend, killing her with her own sports utility vehicle.
Lexington County Sheriff James Metts says it happened about 3 p.m. on Friday in the 200 block of Decie Road near Batesburg-Leesville.
The sheriff says deputies found 45-year-old Charlie Roof standing in the road near the body of 49-year-old Mary Jane Tucker, also from Lexington.
Her Dodge Durango was parked in the middle of the roadway.
Metts says officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on Roof's breath, and they say he informed them that both he and Tucker had been drinking heavily and had an argument.
Witnesses told deputies that Roof drove away from a home on Decie Road where Tucker had been visiting relatives at a speed that caused the tires on Tucker’s SUV to spin on the dirt road.
It's not clear how Tucker, who was riding as a passenger, ended up outside the vehicle before the SUV ran over her.
According to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, Tucker suffered traumatic injuries that led to her death, including a fractured liver and lacerated lung.
Roof is charged with felony driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs that results in a death.
