Three out-of-state swimmers died from rip currents off South Carolina's coast over the July 4th holiday weekend.
Authorities say a 69-year-old man from Ohio was in chest-deep water, holding his girlfriend's hand, when a rip current swept him off his feet Saturday afternoon near Hilton Head Island.
The woman swam to shore and screamed for someone to call 911 and the man's body surfaced a short time later.
Meanwhile, two North Carolina men – ages 50 and 57 – drowned from rip currents on July 4th while swimming at North Myrtle Beach.
Officials say 98 people had to be rescued Thursday after beachgoers got caught in rip currents in that area.
