Three teenagers have been arrested in the fatal shooting of a woman at a Columbia bakery last week.
Police Chief Ruben Santiago says two of them are documented gang members – Troy Stevenson and Lorenzo Young, both 18.
The third suspect is a 16-year-old.
The chief says investigators think the trio intended to rob a club next door, but that was closed, so they targeted the bakery instead.
Santiago says surveillance video shows that about 3:30 the morning of July 1st, Stevenson and Young entered the bakery kitchen for Carolina Cafe and attempted to rob 33-year-old Kelly Hunnewell, while the 16-year-old stayed outside as a lookout.
“The bakery at 93 Tommy Circle is just where they do the baking and deliveries from,” Santiago says. “So there's no money there.
"And so these three individuals that went there to rob somebody – it's a senseless act, in the fact that there's nothing there to rob, but even more senseless and heinous is that fact that they murdered someone.”
Santiago says the video shows that Hunnewell put up a fight but was shot in the chest.
The chief says Crimestoppers tips helped determine the identities of the suspects.
All three are charged with murder, kidnapping, attempted armed robbery and various other crimes.
Hunnewell was the mother of four children ranging from ages 6 to 13.
