A Midlands man was killed in Calhoun County early Wednesday morning when he had car trouble along I-26.
The Highway Patrol says just before 3 a.m., the man was attempting to push his vehicle off the interstate near the Dixiana exit for Highways 21 and 176 when a tractor-trailer approached.
The driver of the truck told troopers he did not see the car until he was almost there. He swerved, but sideswiped the vehicle and hit the motorist.
The Calhoun County Coroner's Office has identifies the victim as 48-year-old Freddie Guthrie of Columbia.
Meanwhile, two passengers were killed Tuesday night in West Columbia when a vehicle struck a sign near the road.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office says three occupants were in a small car that veered off the road in the 1000 block of Meeting Street about 10:30 p.m. and struck the sign for the Goodwill Clearance Center.
The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment.
But a front seat passenger, 22-year-old Ashley Brittner of West Columbia, and a passenger in the rear seat, 53-year-old Michael Cason of Lexington, both died at the scene.
In a third Midlands wreck this week, authorities say a Columbia woman actually died before the crash occurred.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says Sharon Grate of Columbia was driving westbound along the I-20 Monday when witnesses say they saw her vehicle swerving and then it struck a concrete barrier wall near Broad River Road.
The coroner says an autopsy shows that Grate died prior to the crash from a pre-existing medical condition.
Sunday would have been her 49th birthday.
