The executive director of an association for criminal defense lawyers will be needing a defense attorney for her own case.
47-year-old Teresa Edmonds has been accused of stealing $192,000 from the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
In March, the president of the organization contacted the Richland County Sheriff's Department about the missing funds, alleging that Edmonds was the one responsible.
After an investigation by the Sheriff Department's financial crimes unit, Edmonds turned herself in Thursday and was arrested.
Sheriff's Deputy Curtis Wilson says the investigation shows the money was stolen between 2004 and this year.
“She used the money to go on trips...personal dental work...cosmetic surgery as well...purchase computers, cellphones for her family members as well...and even clothes and food, among other things,” Wilson says.
The defense attorneys association has issued a statement saying the group is “deeply saddened and disappointed” at the events which have led to the criminal charges – and the termination of Edmond's employment.
