COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - Crews widening I-20 east of Columbia are implementing a major traffic shift starting today.
The state Department of Transportation says the eastbound lanes will be split by concrete barriers with drivers unable to change lanes for six miles.
Anyone wanting to take Exit 80 to Clemson Road will have to be in the right lane.
The DOT warns there could be delays as drivers adjust to the new traffic pattern.
The split is part of a project to widen I-20 to three lanes in each direction.
The eastbound lanes will be split for about three months, with a similar shift following in the westbound lanes.
Officials say this should help the project finish next May, more than a year ahead of schedule.
