The Newberry County Sheriff's Office reports that residents are getting calls informing them they've won a contest from Publishers Clearing House.
Sheriff Lee Foster says “winners” are offered a new car, generally a BMW or Mercedes-Benz, and a large amount of money -- up to a half-million dollars.
“Here's the catch,” Foster says. “All you have to do is pay taxes and handling in order to get the car because we have to ship the car to you from the factory. And it varies between $1,000 and $5,000.
“And they tell them to go to Walmart and where in Walmart to go – they even give the address of the nearest Walmart – and then ask them to send a money order.”
But Foster says don't send any money – it's a scam.
The sheriff says this is not affiliated with Publishers Clearing House, but is coming out of Jamaica.
Foster says this has a key warning sign where you're asked to pay toward a prize, and as for taxes, “If you win something and then they want you to pay something or pay a smaller amount, most of these things you would get a tax notice on, but it would come way after you received the prize.”
