Authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide incident that occurred over the weekend in Lexington County.
The Sheriff's Department says a 60-year-old Lexington man was fatally stabbed by his nephew around noon Sunday.
“Detectives determined that Phillip Brierly, Jr., 23, used a six-inch knife to stab his uncle, Dennis Twiddy, multiple times in Twiddy's back at the home at 112 Lantern Hill Circle, where the two men lived with other relatives,” says Sheriff's Major John Allard.
He says Brierly then grabbed a handgun.
Relatives tried to disarm him but in the process, shots were fired and his father was wounded in the shoulder, while Brierly's brother-in-law was wounded in the finger.
“Brierly then went to the home's laundry room, where it appears that Brierly shot himself in the head with a .38-caliber Rossi handgun,” according to Allard.
Investigators are trying to determine the motive for the stabbing and shootings.
