The State Law Enforcement Division has agreed to investigate the Columbia Police Department after a fired captain accused the police chief of a plot to frame an assistant city manager.
But it's not clear just what SLED will investigate.
Former Captain Dave Navarro says he was fired Monday after contacting SLED with claims that Police Chief Ruben Santiago tried to involve Navarro in a scheme to get Assistant City Manager Allison Baker fired so Santiago could become chief and former chief Randy Scott could get Baker's position.
Santiago has called the allegations ridiculous, and says he also has contacted SLED to request an investigation into Navarro.
City officials say the former captain was fired for insubordination, shredding certain documents and illegally recording a call with Santiago.
And in his letter to SLED, the police chief says Navarro also may have misappropriated money from the Columbia Police Foundation.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry says state police will be looking into things, but he would not elaborate on which things.
