A man was taken into custody Tuesday night after authorities say he made threats to his wife and the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff James Metts says 31-year-old Ronnie Starling phoned the front desk at the law enforcement complex late Tuesday afternoon and said he wanted to speak to his wife, whom he mistakenly thought was there.
Metts says Starling claimed to be armed, and he used profanity when threatening to harm his wife and to cause harm at the Sheriff's Department.
During a series of calls with deputies, trained negotiators spoke with Starling and eventually persuaded him to tell them his location.
Officers went to the 2000 block of Glen Road near West Columbia and took the homeless man into custody without incident.
He was not armed at the time.
The sheriff says Starling was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation. So far, he faces charges of unlawfully using a telephone.
Deputies were searching for his wife to make sure she was OK.
