Authorities have identified a man shot and killed while holding his child when gunfire broke out Wednesday night at Deer Park Apartments in Columbia.
Richland County Sheriff's Sergeant Curtis Wilson says 25-year-old Howard Nemley was hit as he stood in the parking lot about 9 p.m. near where a disturbance occurred.
“The victim in this shooting had nothing to do with an altercation that was going on between some young teenagers – two groups that were verbally arguing and then physically fighting and then at one point, started shooting,” Wilson says.
“And that's when the victim was struck in the upper body multiple times while he was holding his 3-year-old daughter.”
Wilson says Nemley died at the scene, but the young girl was not injured in the shooting.
Investigators won't say if the incident is gang-related, although other residents in the area insist it is.
At last report, no arrests in the case.
