A police officer trying to break up a fight in a Columbia neighborhood Thursday afternoon shot a man accused of assaulting him.
Police say the officer was responding to the disturbance near Woodridge Drive and Pineneedle Road about 3:30 p.m. when the suspect attacked him, striking him in the head.
Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons says the officer first tried to subdue the attacker with pepper spray and his baton. When that didn't work, the suspect was shot in the lower body.
Timmons says both the officer and suspect were taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The State Law Enforcement Division will investigate the incident.
