A return trip from the beach turned tragic early Tuesday morning along I-26 in northwest Richland County.
The Highway Patrol says about 2 a.m., an SUV veered into the median near the Peak Exit and the driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The driver, 19-year-old Demariel Smith of Gaffney, was ejected and died.
County Coroner Gary Watts says Smith was not wearing a seat belt.
Seven passengers, including four children, were buckled up and were treated for minor injuries.
