Authorities have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man thought to be an innocent bystander holding his daughter in the parking lot of a Richland County apartment complex.
The Sheriff's Department says 29-year-old Kevin Lewis is charged with murder in the incident the evening of July 24th at Deer Park Apartments off Two Notch Road.
Investigators say this is another case involving gangs.
Two groups of juveniles – one from Deer Park, the other from Brookside Apartments – got into an argument in the parking lot.
Original reports were that the person fatally shot, 25-year-old Howard Nemley, was an innocent bystander holding his 3-year-old daughter.
But Sheriff's Captain Chris Cowan says further investigation shows Nemley and his friend, 23-year-old Eric Salley, may not have been as innocent as first thought.
“The two groups had actually settled the dispute and the victim and his friend actually incited...and the friend actually was cussing at the groups, was provoking them to fight,” Cowan says, “at which time a gun was pulled out and shots were fired directly at the victim and we believe the victim was targeted.”
Cowan says this is a tragic example of gangs and people getting involved in situations that should be resolved without violence.
He says Lewis, the suspect arrested in the shooting, is not cooperating as authorities search for other suspects.
Cowan says Lewis arrived at the scene with other suspects who were in a green SUV and investigators are seeking that vehicle and more identities.
