A U.S. Postal Service employee is accused of stealing counterfeit bills from mail shipments and then trying to spend the fake money.
Investigators say 45-year-old Richard Houghtallen presented counterfeit funds on Thursday to make a purchase at the Dunkn Donuts at 1522 Two Notch Road on his way to work at the Dutch Fork Post Office.
After the bogus currency was linked to Houghtallen, authorities searched his home and say they found more than $10,000 worth of the counterfeit bills.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says Houghtallen was arrested at work with more than $250 in fake money in his pocket and an additional $100 in his vehicle.
Lott says Houghtallen allegedly intercepted mail containing the counterfeit currency that banks were sending to the U.S. Secret Service for investigation.
He has been charged with breach of trust.
