COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - The South Carolina Department of Mental Health says it will spend $15-million for selling land in downtown Columbia on building and equipment maintenance instead of directly on patient care.
The agency told The State newspaper the money will indirectly help patients because the department has to do the repairs and that money won't be taken from patient care.
Mental health advocates hoped money from selling the 165 acres might go directly for more psychiatrists or psychiatric nurses. The agency has lost $87-million in funding since 2008.
A developer will pay the $15-million to buy the land in installments over the next seven years.
The agency will also be given a part of any profit if the land is sold.
