COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - A high-profile Midlands attorney accused of extorting $1-million from his clients has pled guilty in federal court to mail fraud.
Lexington lawyer Richard Breibart handled a number of prominent civil and criminal cases in his long career.
He was arrested in September and had been scheduled for trial later this year on charges of extortion, mail fraud and wire fraud.
Indictments list three people who allegedly cleaned out bank accounts, investments and retirement savings to give to Breibart.
Prosecutors say he got money from clients by threatening them with criminal charges or non-existent civil penalties.
Breibart will be sentenced later and faces as much as $250,000 in fines and up to 20 years in prison, although prosecutors have agreed to recommend a lower sentence.
