Troopers and other law enforcement officials say they're keeping an eye on all the traffic over this final big travel weekend of summer.
The 78-hour Labor Day weekend “officially” began at 6 p.m. and ends at midnight Monday.
Last year during the same time frame, South Carolina had a relatively low number of traffic deaths – two, compared to seven and 10 in the two years prior.
This weekend also wraps up the so-called “100 Deadly Days of Summer,” the busy travel period from Memorial Day to Labor Day when there's typically a greater number of highway deaths.
As the 100 days come to a close, there have been 195 traffic fatalities so far, or nine fewer than last year.
For the year overall so far, South Carolina traffic deaths are down by 83 compared to this time last year.
