Richland County authorities say a man fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy Monday night had an extensive criminal record.
Deputy John Parker first tried to conduct a traffic stop when he noticed a license plate did not match a vehicle.
But the driver sped off, eventually jumping out while it was still moving and fleeing on foot in a wooded area near Faraway Drive and East Boundary in the Dentsville area.
When Parker pursued, he says the man turned and shot at him, so the deputy returned fire, killing the suspect.
County Coroner Gary Watts has identified the man as 39-year-old Mitchell St. Clair Jr.
The coroner says St. Clair had no known local address, but relatives were located in North Carolina.
Sheriff's Sergeant Chris Cowan says St. Clair, who had seven aliases, was carrying another person's ID.
His criminal record includes drug distribution charges and he was wanted in North Carolina for assaulting a police officer.
On Tuesday Sheriff Leon Lott also said the man possessed marijuana in Monday night's incident.
