The Richland County Sheriff's Department is alerting residents about a scam where someone is posing as a lieutenant with the department.
Sheriff Leon Lott says the scammer calls and says there's a bench warrant for a person's arrest that's been issued from Central Traffic Court
The victim is then told in order to take care of the warrant, he or she must purchase a pre-paid “green dot card” valued at $498 and call back the scammer with the numbers off the card.
The sheriff says several victims have reported receiving such calls.
Lott says if you're contacted, you can call Central Traffic Court to verify whether any bench warrant has actually been issued.
That number is (803) 576-2300, extension 1.
