Nearly two dozen US Embassies closed yesterday and now 19 will remain closed for the rest of the week. Al-Qaeda, the organization we were told was “on the run” apparently is not. In a rare show of bi-partisanship members of both sides of Congress are in agreement that this threat is the biggest we’ve seen in the post 9/11 world.
I find this exceedingly curious. Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe that Al-Qaeda is not “on the run” and continues to look for ways to inflict damage, either real or psychologically on this country and others in the free world. But, in light of all the recent controversy in this country over NSA eavesdropping are we to believe that these bad guys are using methods on communication that they know anything but secure?
Members of Congress with knowledge of the current situation have said that this information was gleaned from cell phone and computer intercepts. Hmmm, if you were planning a major crime right now would you talk about it over a cell phone or via the internet? Probably not, well maybe if you had no reason to believe you were under the microscope. These people, however, are very well aware that they are. Given that are we to really believe they are just throwing up their top secret plans for any low level operative at the NSA to see?
My fear is that all of this is a ruse. Get us looking at the one hand while the other does the real damage. I just hope that someone in a position to protect this country knows that too.
