It's been well documented - and pretty quickly - that Aaron Alexis had quite the checkered past. The man who shot and killed 12 people in DC yesterday had multiple run-ins with the law. Those included at least 2 incidents involving guns, one in 2004 and another in 2010.
In spite of this Alexis, who had also been treated for mental illness, is reported to have held a "secret clearance" that apparently allowed him access to the Naval facility along with access to who knows what else.
While we continue to search for the motiviation behind what he did and search for answers we may never find, one thing is for certain. The system we are currently using to grant these clearances is clearly broken. We wondered the same thing after the Ed Snowden story broke. It would have been reasonable to think that a top to bottom review of the system would have been ordered. Apparently it was not, and now 12 innocent people have lost their lives.
There is no excuse for that.
