If all goes as he hopes it does tomorrow, former Governor Mark Sanford will be one step closer to returning to politics. Low Country polls indicate the he and former Charleston City Councilman Curtis Bostic are running neck and neck in the primary runoff.
Question is, if Sanford prevails on Tuesday what happens next month when the runoff winner goes up against Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, who has the liberal base solidly behind her? Sure Sanford drew more than a third of the vote in a crowded field in the primary last month, but keep in mind that nearly two-thirds of Republicans voted against him that time.
What is left of the 1st Congressional district after the Myrtle Beach area got it's own district - the 7th - may be fiscally conservative but is more socially liberal than many other areas of the state. You would think that conservative voters that haven't quite forgiven Sanford for his sins would hold their collective noses and pull the lever for the GOP candidate in May if Sanford wins tomorrow, but then again they might just send him packing...up the Alleghany Trail.
